Three Women

The three women who witnessed Christ’s burial and then purchased spices for the preparation of his body are often overlooked (Mark 16:1; Luke 23:54-56). However, the timing of their activities is critical to the process of confirming the sequence of events surrounding the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Evaluating the activities of these women in conjunction with the death and burial of Jesus is the eighth puzzle piece in this topical series.

After these women had purchased and prepared the spices, they returned to the tomb on another day (Mark 16:1-2) to anoint the body of Jesus. We are not told specifically the reason for this anointing. Many theologians believe it was the customary way of reducing the odor of a decomposing body. Others suggest it was their way of expressing devotion to the one they remembered and loved.

What Happened After the Crucifixion?

The seventh puzzle piece in our quest to confirm the dates of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection lead us once again to the Gospel accounts.

Taken together, the Gospel accounts in Matthew 27:57-66 and 28:1; Mark 15:42-16:2; Luke 23:50-56 and 24:1; and John 19:38-42 and 20:1 create a composite picture of the events surrounding the burial of Jesus, including the few hours after His resurrection some days later. These scriptures offer us a window through which to see what occurred in the days following the burial of Jesus.

The following is a summary of what transpired following the death of Jesus, according to Rev. Jack Barr, in his article “Jewish Burial” (2012), and Ralph Gower, from his book The Manners and Customs of Bible Times (2005).

What Sign?

Jesus told the Pharisees that He would give them a sign that he was the Messiah. The sign He gave was this: He would, like Jonah, be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights (Jonah 1:17; Matthew 12:40). Jesus said this twice in Matthew 12:40 for emphasis.

This statement – this sign – by Jesus constitutes the sixth puzzle piece in our quest to discover the actual date of Jesus’ death and resurrection, as well as other truths surrounding these events.

Why Two Sabbaths?

It is widely accepted that there were actually two Sabbaths during the week of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.  However, this fact is frequently overlooked, misunderstood, or ignored by those studying the crucifixion of Jesus, adding to the confusion of efforts to properly time the events of Passion Week (Leviticus 23:6–8, John 19:31).

I consider the case of the two Sabbaths as the fifth puzzle piece in our quest to establish the actual date of Jesus’ death.
